Summary
Core Japanese subtitle parsing and dictionary lookup are designed to run on your Windows PC. KotobaPlay uses online services for email sign-in, subscription checks, Stripe billing, and online word pronunciation. Optional context explanations and local translation use a separately downloaded model on your PC.
Account and billing information
When the account service is activated, KotobaPlay will use:
- Your email address to send six-digit sign-in codes and identify your account.
- Trial start and end times to enforce the one-time 3-day free trial for a first verified account.
- A Stripe customer identifier and subscription status to confirm access.
- Short-lived sign-in and checkout records, along with protected rate-limit identifiers used to reduce abuse.
Sign-in codes expire after 10 minutes. The service stores protected digests for codes and session tokens rather than storing them as readable values. The desktop app keeps its active sign-in token in memory; restarting it requires signing in again.
Payments will use Stripe’s hosted checkout. Stripe collects and processes payment details under its own privacy terms. KotobaPlay’s subscription server does not receive your full card number.
Information kept on your PC
KotobaPlay stores app preferences, focused and saved vocabulary, review progress, minigame scores, streaks, and mastery details locally on the computer where you use the app. Japanese subtitle text is processed locally for readings and dictionary results.
If you choose optional local context explanations or local translation, the related model runs through a loopback-only local engine on your PC. Model output can be inaccurate. Loading subtitle files into KotobaPlay makes their text available to the local app features you select.
Connected services
- Email delivery: sends the sign-in code to the address you provide.
- Stripe: hosts checkout, processes payment, and provides subscription status and a customer billing portal.
- Online pronunciation: sends the selected Japanese word to Microsoft’s online voice service when you ask to hear it.
- Stremio: plays your video and provides the playback environment. KotobaPlay does not supply shows, streams, or subtitles.
Those services may process information under their own privacy terms. Your chosen streaming or subtitle providers are separate from KotobaPlay.
Retention and your choices
Local app data remains on your PC until you remove it. Account and access records are retained as needed to operate the account, prevent trial resets and abuse, and handle subscription access. Stripe may retain transaction records under its own requirements.
You may contact support to request access to, correction of, or deletion of account information. Some billing or security records may need to be retained where required for transactions, disputes, fraud prevention, or applicable law.
Security
The prepared service requires HTTPS, validates Stripe webhook signatures, limits sign-in attempts, and avoids logging passwords, sign-in codes, credentials, or Stripe response bodies. No system can guarantee absolute security.
